National Walk Safely to School Day

News Article Date:
Wednesday, 16 May 2018

There’s a way to get to school that is fun, builds independence, improves health and is great for the environment.

Friday May 18, 2018 is Walk Safely to School Day.

The day is part of the ongoing Healthy Moves program, which encourages the use of sustainable transport options for students.

Warrnambool City Council Travel Smart Officer Nicole Wood said that the Healthy Moves program is designed by kids for kids.

“When you ask children what can be done to make walking or riding to school a more appealing option, they’re always full of great ideas,” she said.

“Feedback from kids is that they love to meet up with friends and walk and there is a sense of achievement when they walk or cycle to school.

“We all want to see our city’s youngsters be as healthy as they can be, and we all have a role in making this a reality.

“As well as parents understanding the benefits of allowing their kids walk or ride to school, drivers can take simple actions like slowing down, making eye contact at intersections and following road laws around schools.

“A good place for a young child to start is by walking with an adult or older children. If you live too far away from school to walk or ride, we encourage children to be dropped off within walking distance of their school.

“May 18 will be the perfect day to give walking or riding to school a try.”

East Warrnambool Primary School grade six student Holly Parkes travels to school with her younger brother each morning and says that she feels “grown up” to be able to make her own way.

“Sometimes I walk and sometimes I scoot to get here even faster,” she said.

“Sometimes I see my friends on the way.”

Most schools in Warrnambool have maps available which outline the safest ways to walk or ride to school.
