Murals with a twist at AquaZone

Five functional artworks have been unveiled at AquaZone.

Local artist Rachael Anderson has painted five sea-themed murals on the leisure centre’s folding tables.

The paintings feature sea creatures including turtles, sharks, whales, octopuses, dolphins and mermaids.

When not in use, the tables are displayed on the walls in the aquatics area for the enjoyment of patrons.

As a tattooing apprentice, Ms Anderson said that she is more used to working with flesh than furniture, but she was delighted with the results.

“I didn’t think they’d turn out as good as they did. I’m really happy with them,” she said.

“It took about a month to paint all five.

“The biggest challenge was having the tables in my house and trying to keep my five year old from touching them before they were dry - the resin took a week to fully set.”

AquaZone Leisure Services Officer Mandy Prisco said that a desire to help the environment was the catalyst for the artworks.

“The tables are used for children’s birthday parties, so I thought this could be a good way to keep up the playful, party theme while cutting out some of our disposable decorations,” she said.

“With over 240,000 visits annually AquaZone is a great place to promote local artists, and the artworks ad to the aesthetics of the centre.
