More library time on Saturdays

News Article Date:
Tuesday, 29 August 2017

The Warrnambool Library is set to double its Saturday opening hours.

The Library currently opens on a Saturday from 10am to midday but from September 2 will be open from 10am to 2pm.

Earlier this year Council voted unanimously to extend the opening hours following a petition led by Warrnambool Primary School student Milla Darmanin.

“Milla and a team of school mates collected 360 signatures and put a compelling case to Council to increase the library hours,” Warrnambool Mayor Cr Kylie Gaston said.

“As a result an allocation was set aside in the 2017-2018 Council budget to allow for an additional two hours on a Saturday.

“This was a great example of a strong argument being put to Council and the extra hours will be part of a year-long trial to assess interest and demand.”

In a letter to the Mayor, Milla wrote that:

“The library isn’t just a place for reading and borrowing books; the very young can engage in story times whilst others can enjoy knitting sessions. Furthermore, free internet access means that young people can complete their study without the hassle of worrying about costs or going over their data limits, and extending the library’s hours would only encourage students, teachers and parents to utilise such a valuable resource.”

Cr Gaston said the extra hours would suit those wishing to spend more time in the library on a Saturday and also those unable to reach the library on week days because of work commitments.

In 2015-2016 the Warrnambool Library recorded 116,235 visits, provided more than 15,000 computer sessions and 3,336 wifi sessions.
