Have your say on waste management

News Article Date:
Wednesday, 13 September 2017

Warrnambool City Council is seeking community feedback on its Draft Resource Recovery, Waste Minimisation and Management Strategy.

The draft strategy aims to set the direction for resource recovery and waste management within the municipality.

“The range of proposals in the strategy includes containing litter through improved equipment, education and enforcement, working with the community to advocate for Warrnambool to be a plastic bag free and tackling illegal rubbish dumping,” Warrnambool Mayor Cr Kylie Gaston said.

“While Council has for some years been active in programs aimed at diverting material from landfill and in protecting the natural environment from pollution, this is the first time all these activities and future proposals have been gathered into a single cohesive document.

“Managing waste is something that affects us all.

“Thankfully the days of sending everything to landfill are behind us and we now know that diverting waste from landfill has the potential to substantially cut greenhouse gas emissions.

“Materials that might once have been considered waste may be resources that can be put to good use.

“The strategy describes a ‘waste hierarchy’ which ranks ways of dealing with waste from most preferred  methods such as reducing and reusing waste to the least preferred which includes treating and disposing of waste.

“The strategy will also help inform the next kerbside collection service and contract which will be advertised by public tender next year.

“The collection service could include a food organics and green organics collection which an increasing number of councils across Victoria are offering.”

Separating organic materials from Warrnambool’s waste collection could prevent an estimated 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere.
