Edwards Bridge to be closed for repairs

News Article Date:
Friday, 17 February 2017

Edwards Bridge, which crosses the Merri River along Stanley Street, will be closed for up to six weeks while it undergoes significant maintenance.

The timber bridge, more than a century old, will be strengthened to increase its load carrying capacity.

“A recent structural assessment of the bridge revealed that the main issue affecting the remaining life of the structure was the poor condition of the timber piles which are the timber poles supporting the bridge,” Warrnambool City Council Manager Infrastructure Development and Projects Justin Hinch said.

“As a result of the assessment a 20-tonne load limit was placed on the bridge. Aside from the piles though, the bridge is in generally good condition.”

The Council has engaged a specialist bridge contractor to carry out repairs to strengthen each of the piles.

The project involves the rehabilitation of 31 piles under the part of the bridge that carries vehicle traffic.

“The nature of the work will mean that we have to close the bridge for up to six weeks,” Mr Hinch said.

“Weather permitting, work will start on February 27.

“The bridge closure will coincide with low tides allowing the work to be carried out more safely and efficiently.”

Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to use the adjacent footbridge.

“We understand that the closure will be inconvenient at times and we appreciate people’s understanding and patience.

“The end result of the work will be that the historic bridge will be serviceable for decades to come.”

Council has liaised with Warrnambool Bus Lines to devise alternative routes while the bridge is closed.

The No. 5 Lake Pertobe bus route will continue with only minor changes.  Stops in Stanley Street and MacDonald Street will be temporarily replaced with a stop in Elliott Street.
