Housing development in Warrnambool

Busy on the building front

News Article Date:
Tuesday, 15 November 2016

Housing approval figures for the September quarter reflect a buoyant local housing and construction industry.

The number of new dwelling approvals for the quarter was 52, well up on the number recorded for the same period last year, which was 30.

The total value of building approvals – residential and non-residential - is also well up on the same time last year: $32.9 million compared to $14.19 million.

Warrnambool City Council Director City Growth Andrew Paton said the building approval data provided an encouraging start to the 2016-2017 financial year.

“The new house build numbers reflect ongoing population growth in our city and the increasing choice of housing diversity options across our new residential growth areas and central in-fill areas,” Mr Paton said.

“The value of non-residential building approvals is also a great sign and can be attributed to projects such as the redevelopments at the RSL, Ace Radio and the ANZ bank.

“Warrnambool has more than 25 years of residential land supply available to meet projected population growth.

“An additional 20-plus years land supply is also available within future urban growth areas.

“These levels of land supply demonstrate Council’s commitment to maintaining access to affordable land for existing and new residents.”

Warrnambool City Council, in partnership with the Federal Government, also offers grants of up to $20,000 to eligible new home buyers through its North Dennington Housing Affordability Program.

So far the program, launched in 2013, has assisted 45 families realise their dream of home ownership.  The program will finish on 30 June 2017.
