Bottles for Recycling

Single use plastic bags and plastic bottles have a huge impact on our environment, particularly in Warrnambool where we live on two rivers, vast wetlands and the coast. An abundance of resources go into making plastic bags and plastic bottles which are simply thrown away.

So what can you do about it?

Be part of an Australian first campaign to reduce the usage of single use plastic bottles and plastic bags in Warrnambool. Titled “Live Plastic Free,” the campaign relies on your support.

Over the past six months businesses and community will be asked to take part in the “Live Plastic Free” campaign. Businesses have been encouraged to refuse giving away free single use plastic bags, either by offering an alternative more environmentally friendly bag or placing a levy on plastic bags. Community have been asked to stop using plastic bags and where possible reduce the consumption of water from plastic bottles.

Other initiatives such as installation of more water fountains, lobbying politicians and other organisations for action on plastic bags and plastic bottles will continue. On the 23rd January Council supported an approach to lobby the State Government for a container levy on bottles and write to supermarket retailers and the Australian National Retailers Association to avoid! reduce! reuse! recycle! plastic bag.

Only through a combined community effort can we reduce the impacts of single use plastic bottles and plastic bags on Warrnambool’s environment.
