MEDIA RELEASE: April 17, 2012

The history of Warrnambool’s greatest innovators and inventors will be unveiled this week.

Tomorrow marks the beginning of the month-long National Trust Heritage Festival ‘Innovation and Invention’ which will feature 13 events including an exhibition at Warrnambool Art Gallery, a graveyard tour and maritime history exploration.

The launch of the festival program will coincide with the official launch of the Warrnambool Heritage Strategy during World Heritage Day tomorrow.

City strategy co-ordinator Lisa Gervasoni said the strategy identified practical steps and projects that would make Warrnambool a regional leader in preserving, managing and promoting cultural heritage.

Ms Gervasoni said the strategy launch would be a fitting way to begin the heritage festival.

“This year’s event provides a range of opportunities to celebrate great Australian inventions and discover the history of Warrnambool,” she said.

“When I think of my childhood I think of Australian ingenuity, the smell of Vegemite toast, the thrill of swinging on the Hills Hoist and the sounds of the Victa lawnmower and Granddad’s ute. This festival is a chance to celebrate not only these wonderful inventions but all things great about Australia and Warrnambool.”

The Warrnambool Heritage Strategy and Heritage Festival will be launched at Council’s Civic Centre Reception Room from 6.30pm to 7.30pm tomorrow night.

Admission is free and bookings are essential on 5559 4800 or email lgervasoni@warrnambool.vic.gov.au.
