With electricity prices increasing and more people looking to solar, the Warrnambool City Council joined forces with local business Western District Electrical Services to run a solar bulk buy as part of its Sustain the Bool – Solar Program in 2010.
This was the first time the Council undertook a solar bulk buy following much local interests in the community and other successful Melbourne programs.
Council undertook a detailed process to determine the best system and business to deliver the solar bulk buy and was happy to appoint Western District Electrical Services.
The solar bulk buy involved the bulk purchase and installation of solar photovoltaic panel systems to produce electricity and sell back to the grid. The solar bulk buy was implemented to deliver savings to participants, cut red tape and assist people in saving money on their electricity bills.
The solar bulk buy resulted in 400 people attending community workshops and over 150 people taking part. This resulted in over $1,000,000 invested in solar powered energy in the Warrnambool area and an estimated cumulative saving of $100,000 to participants on their electricity bills every year.
One recent solar "installee" had their electricity bill reduced from $300 to $25 a quarter, resulting in a 3 year pay-back period on their investment. The solar bulk buy has now closed.
